Success doesn't happen overnight. Sometimes it may appear that way to the outside eye, but what you don't see is the years of grinding behind the scenes before that success came into the light. Lately, I've received messages about people saying "man I've been shooting videos for over a year now and I haven't really gotten anywhere with it I'm kind of stuck I don't know what to do can you give me some advice". I just kind of chuckle to myself and let them know that it's not going to happen like that, it's not a light switch you just flip on. It took me years of grinding it out doing videos/jobs I didn't want to do, but knew I needed to in order to get to where I'm at today. You've got to pay your dues, I still do and will continue too for a long time. I don't feel like I'm above certain work and I feel like I run into people all the time that feel that way. Regardless, I'm not at the top nor am I anywhere close to where I want to be. You don't instantly walk into a Fortune 500 company office building and become the CEO, it takes years of hard work to achieve that status. Be patient in your craft and maintain a strong work ethic. Day by day just continue to work on one thing that puts you closer to your end goal. - Jakob Owens

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!
Carve your own path and believe in yourself! A film professor in college once told me I'd never go anywhere with music videos or YouTube. In fact he was so sure, he even went as far as telling me in an out of class office hours meeting that... "I could show your stuff to 5 directors I know right now and they would all say it sucks" and that I needed to follow his plan or he could fail me from his course. True story I swear. Needless to say I didn't let his words affect me, if anything it fueled me. I went against the grain and carved my own path. To this day he's contacted me several times asking me to come back to ASU to speak to his Directing class. Yea....the one that once almost "failed" me out because I wouldn't follow his course curriculum and make a film instead of doing my no good music/youtube videos. Moral of the story: Believe in yourself, don't listen to the people saying you won't or can't, and follow that path of passion relentlessly. - Jakob Owens
The Battle With Social Media
In my opinion social-media as a whole is a leading cause for depression and anxiety in today's modern era. As we all know people only post the best moments (the highlights) of their life for you to view. We see these public displays of their "amazing" life and for some reason may think that their life is so much cooler or better than your own. You then quickly become unhappy or unsatisfied with your own, you want what they have, you want to be doing what they're doing, you want more. But what we don't see are the struggles and hardships those people are also enduring at those exact moments. People are scared to be vulnerable for fear of what others will think of them, so instead of being real, people only reveal these highlights of their life in an attempt to feel better and mask any pain or anxiety's they might be dealing with. We all know this about social media, so why does it continue to bother and influence your mindset. You don't know the struggles of that person day in or day out. There's no perfect person, no one person that doesn't have any problems. Sometimes it's very easy to get so caught up in other people's lives that you forget to take care of your own. I think you would be surprised at the conversations I've had with some truly gifted and special people that have the same fears, struggles, and anxiety issues that anyone else deals with, but you would never know because all that is kept behind closed doors. Just realize you're not the only one that struggles, everyone else does too. - Jakob Owens

People will think they know you, pretend to know you, then judge you from the outside without ever have spoken a word to you, or really knowing anything about you and your true character. People hide behind keyboards, people mute their true thoughts to your face, it's a part of life and the human condition, always will be. Me nor any other person on this Earth is perfect. We all sin, we all end up doing the things that we hate when others do it to us, we all lose our tempers, and we all fall short of the glory of God. We can only attempt to be the best you everyday, work hard, treat others how you'd like to be treated, and remember that it's ok to make mistakes and fail, everyone else does too. - Jakob Owens
